How can you tell the difference between baby hiccups and twitches?

Posted on | July 3, 2009 |

I’m 25 weeks.

Apparently around 18 weeks babies can jump or twitch when they’re startled, and they can twitch regularly.

How can you tell what’s hiccup and what’s twitching?

The reason why I ask is cos I saw a video on you tube of a baby twitching cos of a health problem. My baby was doing it in time to it!

My baby tends to do these movements at the same kind of time each night - whe I’m in the bath and in bed.

Does that make it a twitch or a hiccup?

My baby jumps around - doing hiccups and twitches - when I’m in the bath and in bed too - at least that’s when I feel it most. It just means it’s got into a routine of being awake and sleeping. Mine likes to bump around at 3.30am, waking me up in time for the Hart to Hart double bill on UKTV Drama.

They also jump and twitch when they’re not startled - they’re growing and developing and have a lot of reflex movements. It sounds like you’ve done a bit of research and scared yourself silly - a short video such as the one you’re describing is evidence of absolutely nothing in spite of what it says it’s telling you. How can they make claims without any other corroborating evidence?

Hiccups feel just like when we hiccup - short rhythmic bursts every 5 seconds or so - and they can go on for a while!

Don’t panic. I’m sure everything is just fine.
